Walking
Upper Teesdale is a walkers paradise.... stunning scenery, quiet paths and everything from leisurely strolls along the riverside to serious yomping on rugged fells with pretty dales villages along the way....
From the front door of the Rose & Crown you can enjoy some lovely walks. Make your way down to the river Tees and join the Teesway footpath along to the village of Cotherstone. Return to Romaldkirk on the old railway line which is now an ideal footpath that carries on up to Mickleton and beyond that to Middleton-in-Teesdale, again with the option to return via the Teesway riverside path. Other circular routes close by take in the scenery of Hury and Grassholme reservoirs.
A short drive to Bowlees Visitor Centre and you can walk down to the river Tees at Low Force, a series of waterfalls and rapids. From here follow the river a couple of miles up to High Force, England's tallest waterfall. A few more miles up the Tees you find Cauldron Snout waterfall where the Tees emerges from Cow Green reservoir. The rugged riverside path below takes you through a remarkable part of the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Natural Nature Reserve and a European Geopark!
The nearby fells such as Cronkley and Widdybank (where a nature trail adds to the interest) provide a vast and expansive beauty and the Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve is famous for the extremely rare arctic-alpine flora, best seen in the late spring as well as birds such as the rare blackgrouse, golden plover and ring ouzel.
Slightly further afield there is Hamsterley Forest with miles of tracks and paths that are perfect for walking, running or mountain biking and Romaldkirk is only a short drive from the North Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Eden Valley.
We can provide packed lunches and also have drying/washing facilities if you get caught out by the great British weather! Maps are available to borrow and our knowledgeable team can help you choose a walk to suit you and the conditions.
