A perfect place for star gazing and discovering the wonders of the universe.

Dark Skies in Teesdale

The Rose and Crown is located in rural upper Teesdale on the North Yorkshire and County Durham border in the North Pennines AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and a European Geopark. It is perfectly placed to enjoy dark skies that are ideal for stargazing. As luck would have it there is the recently opened Grassholme Observatory located just a few miles up the road from Romaldkirk making the Rose and Crown a perfect place for a dark skies star gazing break.

Grassholme Observatory hold events on most evenings of the week with the ability to book online for the various sessions. Guests can enjoy an early dinner at the Rose & Crown before the 10 minute drive up to the observatory for an amazing experience.

If you are looking for a winter break at a cosy pub with rooms the Rose and Crown takes some beating with great locally sourced food and a characterful bar. There are plenty of fabulous walks to enjoy during the day along riverside paths and up on to rugged fells. Our Winter Snuggler package offers excellent value for money and includes the option of a 3rd night free with just breakfast and dinner to pay for.
